Why Two Trees?

The small, southern California town that I grew up in sits between the ocean on the west, and beautiful hillsides to the east.  The hills that haven’t been developed are bare, aside from two trees that can be seen from miles around.

Anyone who has ever lived in Ventura, California knows about Two Trees.  Ken McAlpine wrote a lovely piece about Two Trees which you can read here.  In it he says, “Technically the Trees are not mine, any more than the Eiffel Tower belongs to the Parisian. In my mind the Trees are mine. And each time I see them they whisper the same thing to me. If your town has an icon -- and I'm betting it does -- you understand. This is your home. This is where you belong.”

My Two Trees, the trees atop the hill in my hometown, is my happy place.  It brings memories of my childhood, friends and family.

When I was preparing for the birth of our third child, I practiced self-hypnosis.  As part of the process, I was encouraged to find my own happy, safe place.  When I closed my eyes, my mind took me to the back porch of my grandmother’s house.  I could sit on the porch swing and look up and see the two trees on the hill, and I knew that I was home.

Everyone has their own happy place.  Obviously, the trees from my hometown aren’t going to do it for you.  But there will be something.  If you close your eyes, can you see it?  Like me, it might be somewhere from your childhood.  Or maybe it’s where you fell in love with your partner.  It’s anywhere that, when you close your eyes and imagine yourself there, it makes YOU feel happy, and safe.

Two Trees made me feel content and secure when I needed it, which is exactly what I want my clients to feel when I’m working with them.  I want them to feel safe, and secure, and supported, not only through their labour and birth, but in the days, weeks (and sometimes months) after birth.  My role is to support families in the transition to their lives with their new addition(s).
